Chapter Competition Guidelines must conform to National Competition rules.

ELIGIBILITY: To compete in this competition, an applicant must

> be a United States Citizen. Proof required may include birth certificate/passport/voter

registration, naturalization papers. Photocopy acceptable.

> be 20 through 32 years of age as of May 16, 2008.

> have competed in and been named sole first place winner in a Chapter Competition.

> must be available for dates of National Competition (May 16-17, 2008)

> must not be under professional management at time of National Competition.

GENERAL CHAPTER GUIDELINES

Contestant must enter competition at local Chapter, or nearest Chapter geographically, or be assigned to a Chapter by the Career Awards Chair. Contestant may enter 2008 competition once.

 

 

Contestant must have submitted and been approved of all required documents as stated in the Application.

 

 

Contestant must have competed and been declared first place winner of a local NSAL Chapter with three or more participating contestants prior to entering National Competition. Such person will represent that Chapter in the National Competition. Contestants will be sent to the National Competition at the expense of the sponsoring Chapter. Contestants pay a one time $35.00 audition fee at the Chapter level.

 

 

Judges: Three judges and an alternate comprise the judging panel. The alternate judge is utilized only if a judge becomes ill, knows, or has previously worked with a singer. Judges must be professionals in the business and in the position to identify talent, and assist young artists. (Conductors, career singers, stage directors, vocal coaches)

 

 

Repertoire Requirements: Selections performed from memory, with the exception of an oratorio aria replacing an opera aria. A minimum of three languages represented, at least one of which must be English. No musical theatre or zarzuela selections. If selection was originally written as part of an opera, it qualifies. If in doubt, check with the Competition /Career Awards Chair.

 

Category 1. Opera

Three arias demonstrating contrasting musical styles and languages. Selections to be performed from memory. An oratorio aria may be substituted for one opera aria and does not need to be memorized.. Selections to be sung in the original key and language.

Category 2. Art Song

Three Art Songs by different composers, showing contrasts in musical periods and languages.

Accompanist(s): Singer may use own accompanist at Chapter level. Chapter to provide official accompanist at no charge to singer. National Competition Auditioners will use official accompanist.
