Dance 2006

 



Eighteen National Society of Arts and Letters chapter winners competed in the 2006 dance competition, entitled Dance: Variations on a Theme, in Jacksonville, Florida, in May 2006. They are shown here with the judges and NSAL officers and chairs.



Judges for the 2006 dance competition
were Sharon Story, dean of Centre for Dance Education and Ballet Mistress in Atlanta, left; Stephan Laurent, choreographer and former chair of Butler University Dance Department, second from left; and Daniel Lewis, internationally recognized dancer, teacher, choreographer and author, far right. They are joined by Maria Bujones, second from right, who accepted NSAL’s Gold Medal award for her late husband, Fernando Bujones.

John Mark Giragosian, from the Washington, D.C. chapter, received his award from Betty Bergmark, category chair for the dance competition. He received the $7,000 Mary Rich Fife Award in memory of the Washington Chapter member. View video clip from competition


Cyndy Jelinek, career award chair, presents the third-place award to Nicole Maple, who represented the Greater Arizona Chapter. Nicole received the $5,000 Helen Irene Weinhardt Award, honoring a woman who was instrumental in founding three NSAL chapters. View video clip from competition


Summer Catlehe accepts the fourth-place award from Margaret Ludwig, chair of the 2006 Jacksonville, Florida, Convention. Summer, who won the San Antonio Chapter’s competition, received the Estelle Campbell Memorial Award of $4,000, honoring the Pittsburgh philanthropist and very generous donor to the Nicholson-Nielsen Trust Fund.


Alicia Klaffky, of the Washington, D.C. Chapter, presents the fifth-place award to Kelly Yankle, who represented the Kentucky Chapter. Kelly received the Audrey Peery Memorial Award of $3,000, which remembers Mrs. Peery’s selfless commitment to NSAL.


Member-at-large Adela Zunas presents the sixth-place award to Tara Bizub, who represented the New Jersey Chapter. Tara received the $2,000 Dorothy and Bruce Strong Award, honoring the memory of Dorothy Strong, a charter and life member of NSAL.
