Welcome from NSAL's President

“…I would not be the respected name I now am in American literature without the support of NSAL. Thank you all from the bottom of my heart.”
  Gerald Nicosia,
Second Place National Biography Winner 1978, Chicago Chapter
NSAL Distinguished Young Writer’s Award 1983

Ruth Albright,
National President 2006-2008

Welcome to the Web site of The National Society of Arts and Letters, an organization founded in 1944 in Washington, D.C. The society’s enthusiastic members give their time, energy, and talent to identify, promote, and assist talented young artists at the beginning of their careers. Our chapters across the United States work each year to find talented young people to compete for local chapter awards and for a national Chapter Career Award of $10,000 in art, dance, drama, literature, music, or musical theatre.
A recent endowment from Shirley Rabb Winston has allowed NSAL to present additional awards to young artists and vocalists who are between the ages of 16 and 22. These scholarships are to be used for special study, such as vocal lessons, workshops, or summer institutes.
Members are the organization’s most valuable assets. We are united by the vital importance and commonality of our goals. If you are an arts advocate, professional, or patron of the arts, we welcome your interest. Simply click the Membership link at left to find out more about becoming a member.
Young artists may want to enter one of our competitions. Information can be found at the Competition and Scholarships links. Each young artist must enter the competitions at the local level, through the chapter that is closest. Please see the Chapters page to contact your nearest chapter.
We are always thrilled to receive donations, which allow us to assist more talented young artists. Perhaps you would like to honor someone’s memory by presenting a national award in his or her name. Or perhaps you would like to help us with a really large endowment to allow us to have two major national competitions each year. No gift is too small or too large. Please click the contributions link or contact me directly to discuss any questions you might have.
Have fun browsing the Web site. You may even recognize some of our talented winners who have gone on to great things in their careers.

National President 2006-2008
